護封可以包括四種基本功能:介紹、宣傳、美學、保護。介紹書籍的內容和風格,為書籍作宣傳;引起視覺註意,刺激人們的購買欲;將書名及內容轉化為畫面語言,可以讓讀者認出是否連續出版的叢書或套書。護封往往也放上某出版社的象徵,能保護書籍,精緻美觀的設計能使其成為獨立的藝術品。

護封的勒口要精心設計,可利用勒口來刊登內容提要、作者簡介、出版信息、叢書目錄等。護封分全護封和半護封,半護封的高度只占封面的一半,包在封面的腰部,因此也稱為腰帶,用來刊登書籍廣告,也起著裝飾作用。
