識別性是商標的最基本功能。標志的特殊性質和作用,決定了標志的形式法則和特殊要求,這就是標志應該具備各自獨特的個性,不允許絲毫的雷同。

著名學者阿恩海姆·魯道夫說:“任何一種作品的內容都必須超出作品所含的那些個別表象。”也就是說,作品形象必須具備一定誘惑力,使人們的認識向作者需要的方向去集中。鮮明生動的形象有很強的視覺沖擊力,讓人回味,並在回味中得到一種心理上的享受。標志作品應該像旗幟一樣鮮明、醒目而有力。

個性特色越鮮明,視覺表現的感染力就越強;刺激的程度越深,保持的時間就越長識別性是標志的基本特徵。標志作為一種特定的符號,以個性化的視覺形態來強調識別性,除隱形標志外,絕大多數標志設置的目的都是獲取公眾的認識和記憶,因此色彩強烈醒目、圖形簡練清晰是標志通常具有的特徵。但標志是個有限的載體,它不可能傳達出無限多的信息,識別性主要通過標志理念和個性的突出,形式的新穎和強烈的視覺效果來體現行業的特徵。

例如第21屆大學生運動會標志,從標志圖形上即可理解其代表的運動性和活力,“21”演變成火炬造型,但又具有數字“21”的識別性。
