轉印紙為一層吸水性很強的紙或塑料薄膜，在錶面塗一層可溶性膠體構成。良好的濕紙必須具備吸水性強，脫水性好，不易變形等特點。

轉印方式有正轉印和反轉印的區別，轉印紙的結構也稍有差別。一般的水轉印紙，包括底基紙張或薄模，水溶性膠體，

如阿拉伯樹膠、聚乙烯醇和羧甲基纖維素等，起保護作用的打底塗層等採用何種類型的印版必須依據印刷方法（如凸版、平版、凹版、絲網版）而定。

由於轉印時可採用正轉或反轉，因此，還必須考慮印版上圖像的正反，其製版工藝與常規方法一不再敘述。


印刷是在相應的印刷機上進行的，由於被轉印的材料種類各式各樣，有木材、塑料、金屬等，為了使轉印的圖像能牢固地黏附在轉印體上，所選的油墨必須與轉印體材料相匹配。

如塑料製品最好採用相應的塑料油，印刷時首先在轉印紙上進行單色或多色印刷，然後在其上塗布一層黏膠，以便轉印時與轉印體粘貼更加牢固，也可以採用印刷方法，

預先製作一塊能覆蓋整個圖像的輪廓印版，然後印刷一層黏膠。黏膠必須根據不同的轉印體材料、氣候條件來選擇。最後覆蓋一層塗有硅油的剝離紙以保護塗層即可待用。
