紙張的機械強度通常用紙的整體性遭到破壞和結構發生不可逆改的那些應力數值來表示。機械強度是大多數紙種的基本的和重要的性質之一,如對紙袋紙、包裝紙等,都提出了更高的機械強度的要求。根據作用於紙上的力的性質不同,用拉伸強度、耐折度、耐破度、撕裂度、抗沖擊強度等不同的指標來表達紙的強度。

由幾種成分組成的紙,其強度事先難以預測,但紙的大部分拉伸強度耐破度和耐折度指標,數值上接近於紙漿成分中強度最大的成分的相應指標。

對紙的強度有影響的主要因素有:

1.成紙中纖維相互間的結合力和這些力作用的錶面積;

2.纖維本身的強度,它們的柔韌性和大小;

3.紙中纖維的分佈,即它們排列的方向、堆積的密度等。


紙中纖維的分佈也影響它們相互接觸的錶面積,因而也影響纖維間的總結合力。此外,隨著紙中纖維排列方向的改變,同時也改變了前兩種因素對紙張強度的相互影響。正是這個因素首先決定了紙的不同方向的強度比例,以及其他的主要性能(潤濕和隨後乾燥時的變形吸收性能等)。
