我國自古就有臨摹書畫作品這一行當，但對於近代印刷行業而言，應該是從20世紀五六十年代開始進行高模擬藝術品復制工作的，早期的高模擬藝術品主要採用的是珂羅版印刷、絲網印刷、木版水印等方式進行製作，由於工藝復雜、技術難度大、製作周期長、成本較高，故主要服務於博物館收藏與展出、高端禮品等市場。在中國市場上。到了2000年前後，數字印刷技術的不斷進步使得中國的高模擬藝術品復制市場再次被激活，很多有能力的印刷企業開始涉足這一新興的領域。

　　高模擬藝術品是人們對藝術欣賞和收藏需求的最佳選擇。從目前的市場來看，高模擬復製品主要用於以下幾個方面。


　　1. 禮品。2009年，美國總統奧巴馬游覽北京故宮博物院時獲贈宋代名畫《寫生蛺蝶圖捲》高模擬藝術品。可以說，高模擬藝術品以高調的姿態強調了其作為禮品的功能，更彰顯了其文化內涵和價值。一直以來，我國歷代古畫、名畫的真跡一部分保存在各地的博物館里，供游客參觀欣賞，另外一部分作品被私人收藏，所以，正是高超的印刷工藝使得普通人得以接近那些“珍稀”的書畫作品。


　　2 . 裝飾品。許多大型賓館、飯店、會所為了提升裝飾品位，營造藝術氛圍，紛紛使用巨幅高模擬藝術品來裝飾房間。


　　3 . 展品（ 用於替代原作）對於一些珍貴的畫作，每一次展出都可能出現磨損，為了避免破壞原作，很多展覽都採用原作的高模擬藝術品進行展出。


　　4. 臨摹品。在藝術教學中，學生們需要臨摹一些知名的畫作，但臨摹原作幾乎是不現實的，這時候就需要高模擬藝術品替代。


　　從一定程度上來說，高模擬藝術品是藝術產業化最重要的部分，甚至有人說，以後藝術品市場的增長點不在原作上，而在復製品市場。原作的資源是有限的，而復製品則有更廣闊的市場空間。
