對比視錯覺是指觀察者在相同的時間、空間內對客觀的物體與感知的物體間色彩大小、深淺等方面的差異。具體來說,人的眼睛在觀察物體時受到不同顏色的刺激後,使物體的顏色與刺激的顏色相互作用,兩者間的沖突和乾擾會造成物體的顏色發生某些變化,呈現不一樣的效果。

把明度不同的物體放在一起觀察時,則會發現顏色鮮亮的物體愈發鮮亮顏色灰暗的物體愈發灰暗,這是由於顏色的對比性發生了作用。對比色具有雙重性格,如紅、黃、藍小色塊相互間隔地排列成一個方陣,因為相互之間受到影響,會讓人感覺顏色的色相發生了變化。另外,同一顏色的明暗關系與周圍環境顏色的影響也有很大的關系。

在白色的背景當中,顏色越深感覺物體的面積越小。比如,我們生活中常見的一種現象,燈光在陽光或強烈的光源下其亮度不明顯或感覺不到它的存在,在黑夜或黑暗環境里越發顯得明亮。
