春秋時期,私人著作逐漸增多,對書便於攜帶的要求加強,於是出現了書寫於絲織品上的書,絲織品當時有帛、縑、素等。帛柔軟輕便,攜帶和保藏都很方便,帛書的左端包一根細木棒做軸,從左向右捲起,成為一束,便為捲軸。捲口用簽條標上書名。

但帛造價昂貴,不利於廣泛使用。

而東漢以後,造紙術的發明,為人類文明掀開了新的篇章。文字依附的材料,逐漸被紙張所代替。

紙書的最初形式是沿襲帛書的,依舊採用捲軸裝。

軸通常是一根有漆的細木棒,也有的帝貴族採用珍貴的材料來做軸,如琉璃、象牙、珊瑚、紫檀等。捲子的左端捲入軸內,右端露在捲外,為保護它另用一段紙或絲織品糊在前面,叫作漂。裸頭再繫上各色絲帶,用作縛扎。從裝幀形式上看,捲軸裝主要從捲、軸、襟、帶四個部分進行裝飾。

玉軸牙簽,絹錦飄帶”是對當時捲軸書籍的生動描繪。捲軸裝的紙書,從東漢一直沿用到宋初(公元10世紀)。
