首先,畫家要瞭解文學作品的體裁、形式及表現手法,理解作家的意圖,熟悉文學作品的內容,選擇恰當的視覺表達形式。

其次,要做到插圖源於文學,貼近文學。插圖雖然從屬於文學作品,但絕不是內容的簡單圖解,而是要高於文學,使插圖的獨立性得到充分發揮。
