稀釋的紙漿流布到抄紙網上進行脫水、成型,紙漿始終處在定向運動之中,纖維受紙機牽引,在慣性作用下產生定向排列,形成紙張纖維走向。紙張纖維排列方向會使紙張的性質產生不同,尤其是在吸濕以後,由於紙張纖維在長度方向產生的變形比徑向產生的變形大,這就使紙張的各個方向的性質產生差別,稱為紙張的方性。

單張紙按裁切方法不同,分為縱向紙和橫向紙。橫向紙印刷時,紙張在印刷時產生的吸濕變形方向與印刷滾壓方向不一致,而是相互垂直,所以印刷時紙張易起皺,從而引起套印不準。縱向紙印刷,紙張在印刷時產生的吸濕變形方向與印刷滾壓方向相同,在這種狀況下會避免或減少紙張打皺,保證套印準確。
