在抄紙的時候,紙張的正面為毛布面,比較平滑,細小纖維較多,結構比較緊密;反面為網面,抄紙機將紙張中的水分由這個面抽出,因此也把一些纖維抽出,使得紙張的錶面比較粗糙,粗大的纖維較多且結構比較疏鬆。紙張正反兩面差異的這種性能稱為紙張的兩面性。

產生兩面性的主要原因是:沿紙的厚度方向纖維定向排列不同;網面方向細小物質的流失。紙張正面平滑度高,著墨性好,表面強度低,比反面易產生拉毛;反面平滑度低,著墨性差,錶面強度高,不易產生拉毛;易導致印刷品質量的不均勻性,不利於印品質量的控制。
